In order to fight climate change and protect the world’s forests, the European Union will apply Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 from 30 December 2025 (30 June 2026 for SMEs and micro-enterprises). This regulation will prevent the sale or export of products linked to deforestation or forest degradation that has taken place since 30 December 2020.

Which products are covered by the regulation?

The regulation applies to products such as coffee, cocoa, rubber, palm oil, soy, beef and timber, as well as certain derived products including leather, printed paper and charcoal. Companies placing these goods on the EU market or exporting them will be required to submit a due diligence statement (DDS)..

What changes will businesses face?

  • Businesses will need to demonstrate that their products are “deforestation-free” and comply with the laws of the country of origin.
  • They must submit a due diligence declaration (DDS) including details such as the location of production sites, full supply chain traceability, and a signed statement from the operator.
  • This DDR number will also have to be provided when completing customs formalities.

What are the consequences for non-compliance?

  • Non-compliance with the regulation may lead to products being refused on the EU market.
  • Global supply chains are becoming ever more complex
  • Businesses will need to reassess their supplier partnerships to guarantee environmental compliance.

How can businesses get ready for these changes?

  • Establish an internal due diligence system that meets the requirements of Articles 8 to 11 of the EUDR.
  • Identify and evaluate risks related to the geographic production areas.
  • Gather all required data and documentation from suppliers.
